New York Mets Place Johan Santana on 15-Day DL

By Kevin Van Pelt

The New York Mets were exceeding expectations heading into the All-Star break, but have lost six of seven games since coming back. The news has only gotten worse for the Mets as Johan Santana is now placed on the 15-Day DL after spraining his right ankle.

Santana has had a remarkable comeback season for the Mets which was topped off by throwing the first ever no-hitter in the history of the Mets. However, he has given up a total of 19 earned runs in his last three starts.

Santana was not taken out of the game after suffering his injury which makes this move to the DL seem a little surprising. Santana is a fighter though so he might have been just fighting through the pain as the Mets are facing a crucial part of the season. The Mets are saying that Santana might be fatigued and could use some rest which might be the main reason for his placement on the DL.

Either way, this is a devastating loss for the Mets. The starting pitching for New York has been a key part for their early success and the loss of Santana will make it harder for the Mets to keep up success in the summer months.
