Chicago White Sox Minor League July Updates

By Adam Sager

With everyone in baseball right now consumed in the trade deadline, I thought it would be nice to take a break and look at some of the prospects in the Chicago White Sox system.  So I will pick one interesting player at each level and do a quick rundown of how their season is going.

Lets start with the AAA Charlotte Knights and Jared Mitchell.  Mitchell just earlier this week was promoted to AAA as he makes his way to the big leagues.  He is 2-8 with a double and a run scored in 2 games since the promotion.  With AA Birmingham, Mitchell hit .240/.368/.440 for an OPS of .808 with 13 doubles, 12 triples, 10 home runs and 54 RBI.  He also swiped 20 bases.  His main problem is a very high strikeout rate, he has a 126 Ks to go with a nice 63 walks.  If he can make more contact, that will help his average get into the respectability range and help his all around offensive game.

With the AA Birmingham Barons, another player who was just promoted was Carlos Sanchez.  He was great with A+ Winston Salem (.315/.374/.397) and since he got to Birmingham, he has not disappointed.  So far in 18 at bats, he has 8 hits with 1 RBI, 1 stolen base and 2 walks.  He has been played both second base and shortstop since being called up.  He is still only 20 years old and very young for the AA level.  If he keeps this up the rest of the year, he will definately be a spring training invitee with the chance to challenge Gordon Beckham for second base.

High A Winston Salem Dash have gone through a lot of changes of the happened over the last week or so with the Brett Myers trade.  But I am going to go with a mainstay in Trayce Thomspon.  The 21 year old is having a very good offensive season while playing above average defense in center field.  Thompson is hitting .240/.313/.484 with 24 doubles, 5 triples, 20 home runs, 76 RBI and 17 stolen bases.  He strikes out way to much having 130 strikeouts already this season.  This kid has a great chance to be a dynamic player in center field for years if he can just make more contact.

Catcher Kevan Smith has had a very nice year for the low A Kannapolis Intimidators hitting .280/.342/.419 with 24 doubles, 7 RBI and 60 RBI.  He is one of the better catching prospects in the Sox system, but he needs to make a leap as he is already 24 and still in low A.  He is still young in terms of baseball age as he played college football and baseball.  So we will see if he develops more power as it seems he can stick behind the plate.

Outfielder Kyle Robinson is absolutely killing it for the Great Falls Voyagers.  He is hitting .380/.465/.556 in 108 at bats with 13 doubles, 2 home runs and 27 RBI.  He is already 23 years old, so he is going to need to be a fast riser to make it at a decent age.

The Bristol Sox have a lot of the 2012 draft class playing for them including Courtney Hawkins, the 13th overall draft pick this year.  He is currently hitting .274/.320/.434 with 7 doubles, 1 triples, 3 home runs and 13 RBI to go with 5 stolen bases.  He is striking out to much right now, but he is still 18 years old and just starting out.
