Adam Wainwright Continues to Dazzle with Two-Hit Shutout of Rockies

Have you heard the one about the team that was struggling offensively before they went to face the St. Louis Cardinals? Well, this year is not the year to visit the Cards if you are struggling offensively. They will do you no favors in that department. Between Shelby Miller retiring the rest of the game perfectly after the first hits and Adam Wainwright’s effort on Saturday, they returned 40 consecutive Colorado Rockies batters.

As good as Miller was yesterday, today was a reminder of how great Wainwright is this season. If he doesn’t win the Cy-Young this season it won’t be because of the start of the season I can tell you that. Right now there just isn’t a better pitcher in the majors than Wainwright. He could no-hit anyone anytime out right now. Even when he might not have shutout stuff he is tough to get more than a few off of. This guy is on top of his game right now and especially since he was injured not long ago, it is great to see.

The Cardinals meanwhile are continuing to make a case for being the best team in the game. Their offense isn’t winning any awards but pitchers like Wainwright for instance don’t need much run support. When the opposing team has fewer hits than you have runs, there is a good chance you are winning those games more times than not. That is the situation for Wainwright and the Cards right now. They will hit a skid along the way but it will be interesting if they are playing this well at the end of the season this year.
