Dismal Road Trip Could be Costly for Milwaukee Brewers

Jeff Curry-USA TODAY Sports

The Milwaukee Brewers lost to the St. Louis Cardinals 4-2 Sunday afternoon after a poor effort with runners in scoring position. The loss gave the Brewers a 2-8 record on their critical road trip that took place against three National League Central teams. There is a good chance the dismal performance over the past week could be a costly one down the stretch.

After losses to the Cincinnati Reds, Pittsburgh Pirates and St. Louis, Milwaukee is now eight games below .500 and in last place in the NL Central with the second worst record in the league. Not to mention, they have lost 14 of their last 17 games in the month of May.

“It feels like we’ve been on the road for about a month,” left fielder Ryan Braun said, according to Brewers.com. “It wasn’t very much fun, it wasn’t productive, and we didn’t do very many things well.”

The Brewers have clearly reached a fork in the road, something that no one wanted to see this early in the 2013 Major League Baseball season. If Milwaukee continues down their current path, they will be out of contention before the All-Star break. However, the Brewers have more than enough fire power to do something about their current fate. With that being said, the team must join together and believe in each other in order for something special to happen.

The fact is it was only a month ago that Milwaukee posted a nine-game win streak. The team has shown the ability to dominate on offense and out-duel opponents on the mound. There is no reason to think the Brewers cannot get another win streak going. However, in order to do that the players have to forget about the beating they took against three talented teams.
