Jose Fernandez and Miami Marlins End Cleveland Indians Win Streak

Jose Fernandez

Steve Mitchell-USA TODAY Sports

Any time a team runs into a team with a long winning streak you know they always want to be the one that snaps the streak. For the eight-game win streak of the Cleveland Indians, the honor of ending it belongs to the Miami Marlins and Jose Fernandez. The Marlins managed ten runs against the tribe on 5 extra base hits. As it turned out they only needed one run as Fernandez stomped on the Indians’ offense hard. I guess the Marlins are still on the way up as well.

So many people wanted the Marlins to trade their young star Giancarlo Stanton for prospects and everything else but this team is not so deep into a rebuilding phase that they aren’t dangerous. As a matter of fact, they are one of the more dangerous teams in Major League Baseball right now when they get good pitching. They didn’t do a ton at the MLB trade deadline but they didn’t really need to. They might make a deal or two still throughout the waiver trade month of August but in large part this team is looking pretty good for a run next year if they keep things pretty well together.

They are not quite as deep as the Astros are when it comes to a farm system but they aren’t far behind. Actually the Marlins seem to have the most MLB-ready prospects in the big leagues right now. Fernandez just proves that of course. Don’t forget how little experience he had when he burst onto the scene. This team won’t win with the deadline deals they did but with the current system strength they will threaten the top teams within the next few years for sure. Trade performances like this year explains exactly how.
