Houston Astros Missed Out On Nate Freiman

Ed Szczepanski – USA TODAY Sports

The Houston Astros have not won in Erik Bedard‘s last eight starts. But that’s enough on that.

In other news, Astros fans everywhere are scrounging through their minds for information on why the name Nate Freiman sounds familiar. This is why:

Nate Freiman was in an Astros jersey in spring training but was released because the position was too cluttered with the likes of Carlos Pena, Chris Carter and Brett Wallace. Freiman was seen as the weak link.

Well guess what? He wasn’t.

Carter and Wallace are in a duel for futility, hitting .211 and .210, respectively, and Carlos Pena was dropped after hitting a similar mark, .209.

Now the Astros are reminded of the 6-foot-8, 250 pound behemoth known as Nate Freiman, who the Oakland Athletics picked up upon his dismissal from Houston.

It’s not hard to make the Astros’ choices at first base look bad, but Freiman rubbed salt in the wound in the series finale with the Astros, going 4-for-4 with a home run and four RBI to raise his average to .286, a number that exceeds everyone in the Astros lineup.

Did I mention he plays first base?

Freiman is just another example of a dropped Astro that went on to a different team and excelled, much like Chris Johnson with the Atlanta Braves and Justin Maxwell with the Kansas City Royals.

It’s a disgusting trend and the only possible explanation is coaching.

But again, let’s focus on the positives – Robbie Grossman continues to hit. So hey, at least they got that going for them.
