Jon Jay Really Stepping up for St. Louis Cardinals Down Stretch

For a Major League Baseball team to make a successful comeback down the stretch of the season takes a lot more than guts and talent with a baseball. There are a ton of things that have to happen. One of the pieces of a winning comeback puzzle is the players that step up. The term might be slightly overused at this time of year but each team trying to move from the position they are currently in upward to a better position, needs players to step up to do it. The St. Louis Cardinals are a great example and Jon Jay is the man that has stepped up the most.

So much of the news in Cardinals country revolved around Yadier Molina for the past month that it was difficult to see what the Cardinals actually had going right for them. Jay is the best offensive step-up they have gotten so far and he is a great example of what stepping up really means. This guy has a .273 average for the season but it has been .359 for the last few games.

That trend continues into his run production as well. Where he only has six homers for the season, two of them have come recently. RBI is the same way with only 54 for the season and ten in the last ten games. It is pretty clear looking his stats that Jay has hit an entirely different level with this latest run. Not so surprisingly so have the Cardinals who entered play tonight within striking distance of the National League Central division lead.
