Miami Marlins and Chris Coghlan Finally Part Ways

Steve Mitchell-USA TODAY Sports

Chris Coghlan won the 2009 National League Rookie of the Year award with the Miami Marlins. Injuries and the inability to return to what he once was. The Marlins non-tendered Coghlan at the deadline Monday night and it makes sense. The Marlins do not need Coghlan anymore with the influx of young potential talent coming to the roster.

Coghlan batted .270/.337/.390 with 117 RBI and 82 doubles during his short, five-year career with the Marlins. It was interesting last season to see manager Mike Redmond give Coghlan a chance at redemption. Coghlan started the season platooning at center field with Justin Ruggiano. Both players were in the same boat at the start of the offseason but it looks like Ruggiano made it out alive.

With Christian Yelich and Jake Marisnick set to take the Marlins by storm for the next couple of years, Coghlan’s services were not needed anymore. Miami has no use for him. The team tried to stay as nostalgic as possible by keeping him around continuously but there comes a point in time where you cannot fall in love with the veterans. Coghlan had immense potential after he tore apart the ball in 2009. It is a shame that injuries had to kill his career.

The future for Coghlan is murky. The good thing is that he is not limited to the outfield He played third base and second base along with right field and center field last season. He can be a solid utility man if he stays healthy for a Major League team.
