It is clearly time for a major shakeup for the Colorado Rockies. The news of the Minnesota Twins firing manager Ron Gardenhire should certainly get the attention of the Rockies, and if Colorado is smart they will move quickly.
Gardenhire knows how to manage small market teams and turn them into winners. During his 12-year tenure with the Twins, Gardenhire won six division titles and reached the ALCS in 2002. Gardenhire nearly took the Twins to the playoffs a seventh time, but he lost a one-game playoff to the Chicago White Sox in 2008 in order to determine the division champion.
The knock on Gardenhire is that he has had five losing seasons and a career playoff record of just 6-21. Gardenhire is also known for his pure raw emotion that he brings to each and every game. The former Twins skipper knows how to get the best out of his players and knows how to win, hence the Rockies.
Colorado manager Walt Weiss is a level-headed man and his intentions seem well. However, in two seasons managing the Rockies, Weiss is just 140-184. For Rockies fans, those numbers do not cut it all.
Gardenhire has taken a mediocre team in a small market and turned them into a contender for a long period of time. Gardenhire has that needed spark to ignite Colorado’s players and fanbase. Also, Gardenhire has a connection with Justin Morneau, Michael Cuddyer and LaTroy Hawkins who all played under him in Minnesota.
Perhaps Gardenhire can also put a charge into Troy Tulowitzki and Carlos Gonzalez, while grooming young talents such as Nolan Arenado, Charlie Blackmon and Corey Dickerson.
It is just an idea, but the Rockies would be crazy not to hire the perfect fit for their current situation in Gardenhire.
