American League Division Series Game 2: Kansas City Royals @ Los Angeles Angels
Game Time, TV: Friday, October 3, 2014 – 9:30 PM ET on TBS
Probable Starters: Yordano Ventura (14-10, 3.20 ERA) vs. Matt Shoemaker (16-4, 3.04 ERA)
It took 11 innings to settle Game 1 of the ALDS. The Royals were able to combine some top-notch defense from Nori Aoki with a clutch home run from Mike Moustakas to pull out a 3-2 win. But with a rookie starter coming off a shaky outing the Wild Card game, can the Royals keep the magic going in Game 2?
Ventura will be matched up against fellow rookie and 2014 breakout star, Matt Shoemaker. Although Shoemaker has the edge on paper, he’s also coming off two weeks of rehab after a mild left oblique strain.
When it comes to hitting, the Angels’ big stars simply didn’t partake in Game 1. Mike Trout, Albert Pujols and Josh Hamilton all failed to record a hit in the series opener. Those guys are too talented and making way too much money for that to happen again in Game 2. Expect at least one of them to heat up against Ventura.
If this game ends up being close, you have to like the Royals’ chances. Thus far in the 2014 postseason, they’ve flat out found a way to get the job done. It was small ball in the WC game, and it was great defense and a clutch HR in Game 1 of the ALDS.
Some teams just find a way to win. Other teams buy their way to wins.
Prediction: The Royals will make things interesting once again, but the Angels high-paid bats get going against a rattled rookie.
