Giancarlo Stanton, Miami Marlins Discussing Ridiculous $300 Million Deal

On Thursday, the Miami Marlins presented to outfielder Giancarlo Stanton the contract of a lifetime — $300 million over 10 years, which would surpass the current largest contract, Detroit Tigers‘ Miguel Cabrera‘s $292 million deal over the same duration.

Stanton currently has two years left with the Marlins and romanced the idea of free agency prior to getting hit in the face by a pitch in early September — a hit that required stitches and included facial fractures and dental damage. However, since the hit, Stanton and his agents figured that waiting for free agency to make a decision would prove risky.

The Marlins are coming off a successful season in comparison to the last two: the club finished with 77 wins and Stanton finished the season off with 37 homers, a .555 slugging percentage and 299 total bases. He remains Miami’s franchise player even while the two have had their issues. Stanton has been clear in previous seasons that he was upset with the Marlin ownership in dealing away several of the team’s key veterans in 2010 and a lack of success in recent years.

All that’s left is for Stanton to decide if he wants to assume the risk. Should he take all the money but remain tied to an organization that he has had issues with the past?

While Miami currently is looking better than previous years, there are plenty of holes left to be filled to make the team World Series contenders and that’s really up to Stanton to decide if he’s willing to commit, wait and see where the ball club takes him over the next decade, or to direct his talents elsewhere in hopes of securing a title.

Stanton and Miami are presumably going to weigh other options as in shorter contracts, an opt-out or no-trade clause tied into whatever kind of contract they sign, but only time will tell if Stanton is willing to go all in on the Miami black and teal.
