The St. Louis Cardinals were forced to place ace Adam Wainwright on the 15-day disabled list after he suffered an injury to his Achilles tendon during Saturday night’s win against the Milwaukee Brewers.

As of right now, there is no timetable for his return, which is the best news possible for the Cardinals. The reason is because reports are surfacing that Wainwright suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon. If that were the case, he will be done for the season.

The injury occurred while Wainwright was batting in the fifth inning. After hitting a pop out, he stumbled out of the batter’s box and turned around to see if something hit him.

“If you look at the replay, I get out of the box and I looked back to think the catcher’s mask must have hit me or the bat must have hit me, something must have hit me,” Wainwright said, according to St. Louis Baseball Weekly.

Since it felt like he was hit by an object, the likelihood of a ruptured Achilles tendon becomes even more evident. To add salt to the wound, St. Louis does not appear confident it will be anything less than a season-ending injury. Even though Wainwright will not undergo a MRI until Monday, there is no reason to believe it is an injury he can come back from this year.

There is no question the loss of Wainwright would be a huge blow to the Cardinals, especially considering he has been off to a fantastic start in 2015. In four outings, he is 2-1 with a 1.44 ERA and 18 strikeouts. The good news is the organization has solid depth when it comes to starting pitching, but clearly, there is no way to single-handedly replace one baseball’s better veteran starters.
