Lifting Transfer Restrictions Doesn’t Help Mike Gundy’s Reputation Following Wes Lunt Departure

Jerome Miron-USA TODAY Sports

Former Oklahoma State Cowboys QB West Lunt‘s journey to becoming a member of the Illinois Fighting Illini wasn’t exactly traveled on a smoothly paved road. The speed bumps were frequent. The most formidable of these were the transfer restrictions that were slapped on the young man by former head coach Mike Gundy. Lunt was virtually [...]

Tyler Johnson

As the Oklahoma State Cowboys prepare for the 2013 season, they are preparing themselves to take a run at their second Big 12 title in the last three seasons. To get there, they will need their defense to be stout against some of the high-flying offenses they are sure to come up against in conference [...]

College Football Recruiting: Oklahoma State Reloading QB Position with Kyle Allen

Jerome Miron - USA TODAY Sports

While the Oklahoma State Cowboys may have lost a major talent at quarterback with the transfer of Wes Lunt, Mike Gundy isn’t going to let that slow him down on the recruiting trail. The Cowboys have gone West and currently rank as the favorite for four-star pocket passer Kyle Allen out of Scottsdale, Arizona. Can [...]

The Time Has Come For Mike Gundy to Act Like A Man

John Rieger-USA TODAY Sports

On September 22nd, 2007, Oklahoma State Cowboys head coach Mike Gundy made the national headlines when he reamed a reporter out for questioning the depth chart.  Quarterback Bobby Reid was demoted to second string, and a journalist wrote a column going over possible reasons why he was demoted, since the program itself gave no official [...]

Oklahoma State Going Too Far With Wes Lunt Transfer Restrictions

Matt Kartozian- USA TODAY Sports

A few weeks ago, Oklahoma State QB West Lunt was informed by head coach Mike Gundy that his chances of being the starting man this fall were very slim following spring practices. So, just like many before him that have had playing time either limited or taken away completely, Lunt made the conscious decision that [...]

Oklahoma State, Mike Gundy Look Pathetic Blocking Wes Lunt’s Transfer Options

Matthew Emmons-USA TODAY Sports

The list of potential suitors for former Oklahoma State quarterback Wes Lunt was dramatically reduced Friday with the news that Oklahoma State is blocking him from transferring to three of his top five choices and any Big 12, SEC or Pac 12 school. BREAKING; Rochester HC Derek Leonard: OSU blocking Wes Lunt transfer to SEC, [...]

Top 5 Destinations for Oklahoma State Cowboys Transfer Wes Lunt

Potential New Homes for Former Oklahoma State Quarterback Wes Lunt

ncaa
Matt Kartozian-USA TODAY Sports

Oklahoma State quarterback Wes Lunt has announced his desire to transfer from the Cowboys after a freshman season that started with a bang going 11-11 in an 84-0 win over Savannah State, but fizzled after a knee injury one week after throwing for 436 yards and four touchdowns at Arizona. Injuries forced Lunt to miss a total of seven games in his rookie season in Stillwater and the quarterback position will be a two-man battle between J.W. Walsh and Clint Chelf.

Lunt came to Oklahoma State from Rochester, Illinois where he led the Rochester Rockets to an Illinois 4A state title in 2011, with a sterling performance that saw the 6-4, 211-pound quarterback throw for 506 yards and three touchdowns against Richmond-Burton. His prep career resulted in him being named a four-star recruit, according to 247Sports.com and the No. 12 pro-style quarterback prospect in the nation. He claimed 11 offers from colleges who wanted the player that threw 59 touchdown passes in his final two seasons of high school.

With Lunt in need of a new home, a few potential destinations immediately come to mind and make a lot of sense, but time will be of the essence as Lunt will try to enroll before the fall semester and get ingratiated with his new team for summer camp. Lunt will have to sit out this upcoming season per transfer rules, but will have three years left at his disposal as he looks to settle in at his new school.

5. University of Pittsburgh Panthers

Marvin Gentry-USA TODAY Sports

Paul Chryst was the primary recruiter for Lunt when he was at Wisconsin, so he is familiar with him and the two have a relationship that could be a reason he ends up at Pitt. The Panthers lose Tino Sunseri to graduation and have major questions at the position this season, but Tom Savage, a transfer from Rutgers, redshirt freshman Chad Voytik and true freshman Tra’von Chapman may prevent Lunt from wanting to enter into the mix. The relationship with Chryst is strong enough though that it’s a possibility.

4. Mississippi State Bulldogs

Mark Zerof-USA TODAY Sports

The Bulldogs have had interest in Steven Bench, another transfer quarterback who is looking for a new home, and will be in need of a quarterback when Tyler Russell exhausts his eligibility after this season. He and the promising, yet inexperienced Dak Prescott would battle for the job and could be a nice fit in Dan Mullen’s offense. Mississippi State didn’t show interest in Lunt out of high school, but circumstances are different now than they were two years ago. This may be a long shot, but it’s something to keep an eye on after they also showed a brief interest in another transfer, Gunner Kiel earlier this spring.

3. University of Louisville Cardinals

ncaa
David Banks-USA TODAY Sports

Louisville boasts one of the best quarterbacks in the nation in Teddy Bridgewater, but he is expected to declare for the NFL draft and be a high pick after this season. That will leave the Cardinals without a desirable option at quarterback. The Cardinals were among his offers out of high school and Charlie Strong’s staff has proven they can develop quarterbacks for the next level. JUCO transfer Brett Nelson and redshirt freshman Will Gardner are former three-star prospects who have similar builds to Lunt, but perhaps not as much polish or upside.

2. University of Illinois Fighting Illini

David Banks-USA TODAY Sports

Who says you can’t come home again? The Rochester native could come to Illinois, which is approximately a 90-minute drive east from his hometown just outside of Springfield. The Illini signed dual-threat quarterback Aaron Bailey in 2013, but some have wondered aloud if the athletic Bailey may have to make a position switch. Nevertheless, a two-man competition between Bailey and Lunt wouldn’t steer Lunt away.

1. University of Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles

Chuck Cook-USA TODAY Sports

Todd Monken is the former offensive coordinator at Oklahoma State that helped bring Lunt to Stillwater and is the head coach at Southern Miss who would love to bring in his former pupil and could hand him the starting gig when he becomes eligible in 2014. My only question about this is if Lunt wants to compete in a major conference, but the lure of being reunited with Monken is too tempting to dismiss.

Without Wes Lunt, J.W. Walsh Should be Quarterback of Oklahoma State Cowboys

Richard Rowe - USA TODAY Sports

The Oklahoma State Cowboys found themselves with a heated quarterback battle during spring practice between three quality options. Senior Clint Chelf and sophomores J.W. Walsh and Wes Lunt were evenly matched all spring after all starting games in 2012. Head coach Mike Gundy wasn’t able to choose between the three once the spring session ended, [...]

Oklahoma State Quarterback: Wes Lunt Transfer A Cautionary Tale

Matt Kartozian- USA TODAY Sports

There are few things I really bang a drum about when it comes to college football. One is the idea of paying athletes, which I disagree with, and the other is this philosophy of teams over recruiting players, and the players who seem to be fine with it. With today’s news that talented former Oklahoma State quarterback Wes Lunt has decided to [...]
