Oklahoma State And Big 12 Football Are Getting The Shaft

Oklahoma State is coming off an impressive win over previously undefeated Texas Christian. They are undefeated, healthy and in a power five conference. However, according to the College Football Playoff Committee, that doesn’t mean a thing. Oklahoma State struggled early in the year, as so many other teams have, but the Cowboys didn’t crumble and have gotten better every week.

Before the Cowboys welcomed previously ranked No. 8 TCU into Stillwater, OK State was ranked No. 14. After beating a top 10 team by 20 points, the Cowboys still couldn’t break the top five. TCU was the favorite to win the Big 12 conference to start the season, and continued to be the favorite, especially with the Baylor Bears losing their starting quarterback for the season. Oklahoma State didn’t receive that message and spanked the Horned Frogs at home. With that win, the Cowboys improved their resume, which should have catapulted them to No. 4. Notre Dame came in the fourth spot of the second rankings, with one decent win over the Temple Owls — yes, Temple is their best win thus far. Notre Dame and the University of Alabama have each lost a game already and deserve no shot in the top four until other undefeated teams drop. Alabama lost to the Ole Miss Rebels, who already have endured their third loss of the season. The Crimson Tide also lost that game at home.

No way should any one loss teams be ahead of any undefeated teams at this point of the season if the undefeated team is in a power 5 conference, such as Oklahoma State. The bias towards Notre Dame and Alabama is nauseating. At this point in the season, Oklahoma State and the rest of the Big 12 are getting screwed. The only understandable reasoning is because the Big 12 doesn’t have a championship. If your bigger programs are going to receive credit because they are in the Southeastern Conference, or because their name is Notre Dame, then the playoffs need to be expanded. Take the playoff and expand it to eight teams — the winners of each power 5 conference and three at large teams. Another option is to just let us go back to the Bowl Championship Series.
