Marcus Semien Oakland Athletics Shortstop

The Oakland Athletics shortstop Marcus Semien has truly embraced the role of an everyday shortstop. Even though many were unsure about his ability to play successfully every day at that position, he has proved those doubters wrong. At only 24 years old, Semien has already made a name for himself on the Athletics’ roster.

He has had at least one at-bat in every game Oakland has played so far this season. Thursday was supposed to be his first off-day of the season, but he was called into the game to pinch hit for Max Muncy in the top of the eighth inning. Now, Semien has played in the most games out of any other A’s player.

Semien has undoubtedly been one of the most consistent players on the team. For April, Semien batted .284 with three home runs and 12 RBIs. He has a strong swing and has been able to take on major league pitchers. Semien also has great speed and has stolen four bases this year.

Defensively, Semien has been just okay. He does lead the team in errors, but it must be noted that this is only his first full year playing in MLB. It is expected that he will make mistakes. What is more important is how he will learn from those mistakes to better himself in the future. Semien does already show some glimpses of great range and arm strength at short, so hopefully he will continue to improve.

Semien has successfully filled the hole that 2014 Athletics shortstop Jed Lowrie left behind. He is still growing as a player, but has been a staple in Oakland’s lineup since day one. If he continues to develop his skills throughout the rest of the season, Semien could be a long-lasting solution for the Athletics at shortstop — something they have not had since Miguel Tejada.
