Taylor Jungmann Must Make Most of Opportunity with Brewers in MLB Debut

Taylor Jungmann

Jake Roth-USA TODAY Sports

The Milwaukee Brewers continue to have the worst record in Major League Baseball, which means it is time to see what some of the minor-league players can accomplish. The first of the batch of top prospects who will get a shot in the big leagues is former first-round draft pick Taylor Jungmann, who will make his debut Tuesday against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Jungmann, whowas selected 12th overall by the Brewers in the 2011 MLB Draft, has a mid-90s fastball and slider with plenty of movement. Milwaukee was always hopeful he would be an asset in the starting rotation, but unfortunately, his numbers in the minors have suggested otherwise. For that reason, the Brewers nearly came to grips with him actually being a member of the bullpen instead of the rotation.

Regardless of the thought process a few months ago, Jungmann will be given a chance to show what he can do in the starting rotation. His 2-3 record and 6.37 earned run average in 11 games (nine starts) in Triple-A this season leaves much to be desired. With that said, his 8.31 strikeouts per nine innings is definitely something that can be built upon.

What it boils down to is Jungmann will be given a golden opportunity to show he deserves to be a part of Milwaukee’s future. Essentially, a solid group of players will be gone as soon as the All-Star break, which means roles will open up between mid-July and spring training of next year. If Jungmann wants to have a future as a big-league starting pitcher, he must make sure he gives a top-notch performance in his limited chances. That starts when he takes the mound tonight.

It is true Jungmann has mechanical and mental issues that need tweaking. However, there is a reason why he was a first-round draft pick. Just because he has struggled at times in the minors does not mean he is incapable of succeeding in the majors.

Milwaukee Brewers' Rymer Liriano Hit In Face With Pitch

The Milwaukee Brewers caught a tough break on Sunday when 24-year-old outfielder Rymer Liriano was hit square in the face with a pitch by Matt West of the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Dominican outfielder, who was fighting for a roster spot with center field vacant in Milwaukee, suffered multiple facial fractures and is out indefinitely.
