Of all the names on All-Star rosters, it’s probably Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder A.J. Pollock that you’re least familiar with. Pollock plays with a club on the wrong side of .500 (although they’re getting close!) that has been the doormat of the league the last few seasons. Plus, it doesn’t help that he’s dwarfed by the superstar status of fellow All-Star Paul Goldschmidt. Regardless, Pollock is rightfully on his way to Cincinnati for this year’s installment of the Midsummer Classic.

While Pollock was absent from fan voting ballots, Pollock earned the players’ vote for All-Star royalty. Clearly, his peers are well aware of his lights out play and statistics. Currently, Pollock leads all major league outfielders in total hits and multi-hit games. Through 81 games, Pollock has slashed a .303 batting average, 17 doubles, two triples, ten home runs, 38 RBI, and 54 runs scored with 18 stolen bases.

Let me repeat: Pollock has more hits than any other outfielder in all of MLB. That means, quietly and humbly, Pollock has more hits this season than uber-popular Mike Trout, Giancarlo Stanton, Bryce Harper and Andrew McCutchen.

This is Pollock’s first trip to the All-Star Game and he’ll be joined at Great American Ball Park by Goldschmidt, the starting first baseman. This marks the second occasion the duo will share the honors together. In 2011, they were teammates in the Summer League All-Star game in Jackson, Tenn., where Pollock ended the day batting two for three with a walk, stolen bases and two runs.

Pollock is the 21st player in franchise history to be elected to an All-Star game, and he’s just as deserving as all the others.
