Steve Cishek Trade is a Great Gamble by St. Louis Cardinals

Nobody would shed a tear for the St. Louis Cardinals if they lost out on adding a key component via trade this season. After all, they are six games out in front of the NL Central and have dominated for much of the 2015 MLB season. Regardless of what opponents might think about it, the Cardinals did in fact add a player in a trade this afternoon. Steve Cishek is now a member of the Cardinals bullpen.

If this move would have happened last season or the season before, the word gamble wouldn’t even enter into anyone’s mind. Cishek has been one of the best closers in MLB, if not the best, for a couple of years. The fact that he has had less fanfare than the Craig Kimbrels of the baseball world doesn’t change the fact that in the ninth inning this man was automatic.

Even though that all drastically changed this season to the point that he was optioned to the minors, this move is still potentially a huge one for the Cardinals. If Cishek cannot return to form and gain a number or two on his heater, the Cardinals still have the second best bullpen ERA in all of baseball. If however Cishek can at least get close to where he was before the stumble this season, the Cardinals might have added more than just another man in the ‘pen.

Imagine having two relief pitchers who could both currently be dominant closers manning the back end of the bullpen. It shouldn’t be all that difficult for Cardinals fans to imagine because of years past. It doesn’t guarantee anything, but if Cishek can return to form, nobody is going to want to be trailing the Cardinals in the postseason after seven innings. That is worth way more than what they traded away which makes this an awesome gamble for them that is very likely to pay off.
