5 Most Likely Landing Spots For Gerardo Parra

By Christopher Gamble

With spring training just over a month away, the free agent market should be starting to wind down. However, there are still plenty of good free agents out there, and Gerardo Parra is near the top of the list. Parra is known for his defense, but his offense received a boost last year as he reached career highs in home runs (14) and slashed .291/.328/.452 while tallying 14 stolen bases. There are plenty of teams that could use a player like Parra. These are the five most likely destinations.

5. Texas Rangers

The Rangers are clearly good enough to contend this season. Right now Delino Deshields Jr. is penciled in as their starting center fielder. Parra would be an upgrade, at least for the moment, and he would also act as insurance for Josh Hamilton who has an injury history and has struggled with his addictions off of the field in recent years. He could also spell Shin-Soo Choo who is no spring chicken. Adding Parra would guard against age and injuries while giving the Rangers an outstanding defender.

4. Baltimore Orioles

The Orioles acquired Parra from the Milwaukee Brewers last season, and he struggled to a .237/.268/.357 line in 55 games after slashing .328/.369/.517 with the Brewers. Still, Parra is a fit for the Orioles who need help both on offense and defense, and they have some money to spend.

3. Colorado Rockies

This might come as a surprise, considering the Rockies haven’t been very active this offseason. However, they have a need, especially if they are planning on trading Carlos Gonzalez, and Parra can play all three outfield positions. This is a logical fit, and the Rockies have shown interest. Parra may opt for greener pastures, however, despite the boost his offense might receive in Denver.

2. Chicago White Sox

Most people believe that the White Sox are going to make a move for an outfielder, and Parra would make sense because of the versatility he would offer on defense. While Parra isn’t as sexy as some other outfield options, he could certainly make a difference in Chicago while costing less than Yoenis Cespedes and Justin Upton.

1. Washington Nationals

Frank Rizzo loves Parra. He signed Parra to his first deal with the Arizona Diamondbacks back in 2004. Rizzo also made attempts to acquire Parra last year before he was dealt to the Orioles. The Nationals could use someone who could play center field in case Michael Taylor isn’t ready, and left field, in case Jayson Werth can’t stay healthy. Parra just makes too much sense.
