What happens when you get two of the most explosive and dangerous men on the planet and put them inside a cage ? A potential Fight of the Year. At UFC 180, the first UFC event ever to take place in Mexico, Fabricio Werdum will go head-to-head with Mark Hunt for the interim heavyweight championship. A five-round main event with two of the most feared, yet technically gifted martial artists today, this fight has nothing but Fight of the Year written all over it.

This main even bout was scheduled between no. 1 contender Werdum and current UFC champion Cain Velasquez. However, three and half weeks until fight night, Velasquez injured his knee and was forced to pull out the bout. Enter Hunt. A fan favorite and MMA veteran, Hunt took the fight without thinking twice. Credit the UFC, which couldn’t of picked a better fight to fill the gap, and the decision to make the bout for the interim heavyweight championship makes this card a whole lot better.

Both fighters enter this bout with a number of their own highlight-reel submission and knockout finishes. The no. 1 contender Werdum enters this fight with an MMA record of 18 wins, five losses and one draw. His 18 wins consist of five knockouts, nine submissions and four via decision. He holds notable victories over Alistair Overeem, Antonio Silva, Roy Nelson, Travis Browne and most notably a submission victory over Fedor Emelianenko.

Hunt, on the other hand, has an MMA resume of 10 wins, eight losses and one draw. His 10 wins include seven by knockout and only three via decision. He holds notable victories over Ben Rothwell, Wanderlei Silva, Cheick Kongo, Stefan Struve and most recently a walk-off knockout win over Nelson.

At UFC 180, two very different styles of fighters will go toe-to-toe: a jiu-jitsu submission specialist against a kickboxing knockout artist. Both fighters will look to force their will and their style in overpowering the other. If the fight goes into the later rounds, look for Werdum’s cardio to prove too much for Hunt, and he’ll look to take the fight to the ground and go for a submission.

However, Hunt only knows to need land one clean shot against any heavyweight in the division and they’re going down. Fireworks are expected, and a new interim UFC heavyweight champion will be crowned in what could well be the Fight of the Year.
