NASCAR

Kurt Busch and Kyle Busch, Brother Against Brother at Bristol

Jerome Miron-USA TODAY Sports

Last week NASCAR was at the wide open Michigan International Speedway. Kurt Busch didn’t win but he came in a solid third moving him into the top ten, continuing his momentum to move him into the Chase. This week NASCAR returns to the House of Busch, Bristol Motor Speedway for the IRWIN Tools Night Race.

The Bristol Motor Speedway is a 1/2 mile high banked race track located in an NFL stadium.  Ok, so it doesn’t fit into a NFL stadium but if you look at it from above it kind of looks like an NFL stadium.  It seats 160,000 fans all the way around the track like a football game.  That’s 50,000 more seats than the largest football stadium in America.  The race is 500 laps or 266.5 miles.

Kurt Busch came to Bristol for the first time in the spring of 01, he crashed out and finished 42nd. Came back for more at the end of the summer and he about halved that finishing 25th 10 laps down, but in 2002 the third time was a charm. Kurt won the race beginning a streak where he won four of five races. Kurt ended up winning both races in 03, the spring race in 04 and the spring race in 06.

It would seem like a Busch brother tag team. After Kurt was done winning in 06, Kyle Busch picked up by winning the spring race in 07. He also won both races in 09, the end of summer race in 08 and the spring race in 10 for a total of five races like his brother.

Kyle Busch leads all active drivers at Bristol with a driver rating of 103. Kurt Busch has the 7th best driver rating of 92.8 but that rating has come down quite a bit since leaving Penske racing for some lessor teams. With the strong runs Kurt Busch and the No. 78 Furniture Row team have been having it would look like Kurt is back. In the Spring Kyle finished second and Kurt finished fourth.  We just might get the Brother against Brother show down we have been waiting for this weekend. The way Kurt has been running he most likely will get the best of his younger brother.

If the Busch Brothers Brawl isn’t enough to watch the race, a very famous driver, Dale Earnhardt Jr. plus others can get in trouble at this race and miss the Chase.

If you cannot get to Bristol Motor Speedway the race will be broadcast live in prime time on National TV on ABC starting at 7 PM ET.
