Dwight Howard: Agent Says Center Has No Intent Signing Extension

By Jonathan Mathis

Dwight Howard‘s agent denies reports that his client will sign an extension with the Los Angeles Lakers if traded to them, and says he will not sign with any team until after he can test the market next July.

As reported, Dan Fegan, the agent for a dispirited Howard, said his client will still see what’s available in the open market next summer after next season comes to an end. The Orlando Magic center has demanded a trade from Orlando, and numerous reports acknowledged that his preferred destination was Brooklyn, though the Lakers are aggressors and frontrunners for the seven-footer at the moment.

Howard’s dream to team up with Deron Williams in Brooklyn was deferred, after the Brooklyn Nets ended their pursuit for a trade and after the team re-signed Brook Lopez to a $61 million extension last week.

But, according to RealGM.com’s Jarrod Rudolph early Thursday, Howard would sign extension to play in L.A. long term. He’s lagging and keeping a prolonged saga going to receive a bigger contract. The longer he waits and stays in Orlando, then he can receive a massive contract and sign a three-year extension with the team that trades for him, according to ESPN.com.

When he becomes a free agent next summer, Howard can sign a five-year deal worth over $100 million.

Howard, who is in the final year of his contract, is still on the move as the Lakers and Nets remain the favorites to acquire him as a rental entering next season.
