2013 NBA Draft: Toronto Raptors Must Look at Big Man

I liked what I saw out of the Toronto Raptors to end this past season.

As the offseason begins for the Raptors, there will be questions that need to be asked about what to do going into next season. Toronto was one of the worst teams in the NBA in rebounding, and that is something that could be addressed in the draft coming up in late June. Toronto probably will not be picking in the top 10, which hurts them slightly, but this is a situation where picking up a big man could help.

I have to think that Cody Zeller is the pick that should be made if he is available when Toronto’s pick comes up. He was one of the best players in college basketball this season and would bring some needed size to this team. He stands 7-foot and 240 pounds so he could use some more bulk, but that size is the key here.

If the Raptors could pair Zeller with a player like Jonas Valanciunas, it would give Toronto two 7-footers to control the inside.

I think that the Raptors will be a team that depends more and more on their outside scoring with players like Rudy Gay and DeMar DeRozan. They aren’t going to make every shot so you need a few big men in the game just to get those rebounds. Zeller decided against taking part in the draft combine this week in Chicago so Toronto won’t get to take a look at him there.

There will be other centers in this draft and while they aren’t players that will turn a franchise around, a player like Zeller could bring some needed rebounding power.
