Orlando Magic Coach Jacque Vaughn Struggling On Player He Wants To Draft
The Magic draft second behind the Cleveland Cavaliers, which kind of interferes with the strategy-making process.
No one is quite sure what the Cavaliers are going to do. Nerlens Noel is the consensus No. 1 pick in the entire draft, but there’s still speculation the Cavaliers would prefer going with Ben McLemore or someone else. They may even decide to trade their top draft pick.
But all that leaves the Magic to put a hold on what they decide, depending on how the Cavaliers go.
If he’s going with his own instinct, Vaughn might prefer taking McLemore if he’s available. If he’s not, another guard like Trey Burke or one of the other excellent guards out there are an option.
It could be that Vaughn or one of his bosses would prefer Noel for the inside game he would provide the Magic. That might be the No. 1 need for the team right now.
Vaughn came to the Magic with the idea of building a franchise with players that would be taking Dwight Howard‘s place. He wasn’t necessarily expecting the youth movement he’s inherited as mandated by the Magic ownership. He really didn’t have this expertise when he was an assistant with the San Antonio Spurs.
But Vaughn feels comfortable working with guards, although the inside game is what will carry the Magic. If the Magic draft a guard, it’s because Vaughn got his way.
