With the starting small forward spot vacant for the Los Angeles Lakers, Nick Young and Wesley Johnson must prove they are capable. With both Young and Johnson practicing at the Lakers’ facility daily, Training Camp cannot come any sooner. Expect a heated battle between the two NBA veterans.
This year, the Lakers actually have multiple spots yet to be filled. Jordan Hill is expected to earn the starting power forward position, while the small forward position is open. Out of the players capable of playing at the small forward position, it would seem that Young and Johnson are clearly the favorites for the spot.
The competition at the small forward position isn’t great, but Elias Harris, Shawne Williams, Chris Douglas-Roberts and Marcus Landry will also receive looks at the position. The Lakers, however, benefit greatly from the competition.
With many teams in the NBA with young, explosive small forwards, it’s important for the Lakers to be able to match up with them. Both Young and Johnson give the Lakers that ability to match up with, on any given night.
The battle at the small forward position will definitely provide excitement for the Lakers fans and coaching staff. Whoever wins the starting position, the Lakers will get a good starter and an equally good backup. With so much doubt cast upon the Lakers this offseason, Training Camp will bring back the excitement factor for all Lakers fans.
