Indiana Pacers: Paul George Channeling His Inner Reggie Miller

If there is one person Indiana Pacers fans love, it’s Reggie Miller. Miller was arguably the best player on the Pacers since the ABA/NBA merger, the guy that every kid in Indiana strove to become, and the reason the Pacers became a household name in the 1990s. Now Paul George is trying to take Miller’s place in fans hearts, starting with his hair cut.

The Pacers shared the photo below on their Facebook page along with George’s quote, “I went for the Reggie look!” George began his transformation last season when he became the Pacers’ new franchise player, taking over for Danny Granger who never climbed to the same rung as Miller.

George averaged 17.4 points, 7.6 rebounds and 4.1 assists in his third NBA season. Compare that to Miller’s third season — 24.6 points, 3.6 rebounds and 3.8 assists — and you can see just how similar their paths are. Mix in the fact that they each made their first All-Star appearances in their third year and that they were both picked in the NBA Draft instead of the hometown player, and everything becomes a bit more eerie.

But while George and Miller share many similarities, it also feels like George could be a better overall player than Miller was. It’s a strong statement to make, but George is a better defender, better all-around player, and has a much better team surrounding him. If George continues to improve just like Miller did, then it’s inevitable that he will pass Miller in the history books.

It starts with a hair cut, but it must end with a championship if George wants to better Miller.
