As the Atlanta Hawks started preseason play leading up to the 2013-2014 NBA season, everyone kind of knew what to expect when it came to their starting five. Jeff Teague at the point, Kyle Korver at the two with Lou Williams still rehabbing, DeMarre Carroll at the three, Paul Millsap at the four, and Al Horford at the five—simple and effective.

For almost every position, the Hawks also have quality reserves. They added a slew of big men to their roster this summer and added rookie Dennis Schroeder to play behind Teague. However, the backup small forward spot was a question coming into training camp and has still yet to be answered.

Atlanta invited several players to camp in hopes that they could find someone to fill that role, but none of those players have really answered the call. As a result, the Hawks have made another signing for the preseason. According to a report from Tuesday by Chris Vivlamore of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the Hawks signed Cartier Martin to a partially guaranteed contract. Vivlamore later reported that Martin has his first practice with the Hawks on Wednesday.

The 28-year-old Martin has spent five seasons in the NBA playing with three teams, including spending the entirety of the last three seasons under the watch of the Washington Wizards. Last season he appeared in 41 games, averaging 6.6 points and 2.4 rebounds while shooting only 38.1 percent from the floor, but did shoot a solid 39.7 percent from three.

Martin isn’t a great defender, great rebounder from the position, or efficient overall scorer. However, he’s proven over 161 career games that he has the ability to knock down the outside shot. Coming into Mike Budenholzer’s system in Atlanta where the team is going to be looking for shooters, that skill could be enough to land Martin a roster spot and playing time.
