According to an ESPN Insider, there are officials from several NBA teams who are aware that Detroit is shopping their recently signed prized free agent.
Rumors suggest that the Boston Celtics and Phoenix Suns could be possible contenders to land Smith in order to add depth to their respective frontcourts. The Suns have also been mentioned in trade talks with the Los Angeles Lakers recently in an effort to acquire Pau Gasol.
Although it is not yet clear who exactly Detroit would take back in return if a trade like this were to take place, it would have to be a decent sized contract to match that of Smith’s. He’s currently in the first year of a four-year deal that pays him over $13 million a season.
Possibilities could include Celtics forward Gerald Wallace, who currently has three years left on a $30 million deal or Suns center Emeka Okafor, who has an expiring contract worth $14 million.
Although a move like this would be surprising considering Smith was signed just several months ago, you have to take into account how much of a failure this season has been for Detroit.
Smith is not the only reason behind the team’s failures, but it’s becoming evident that he may not be the best fit for this particular lineup.
Moving him before the deadline could allow the Pistons to cover up this potential mistake quickly and attempt to land another impact player to their roster this offseason.
