The Los Angeles Lakers made another underrated move this offseason by signing Wayne Ellington to a non-guaranteed, minimum contract. The shooting guard will give the team more depth on the perimeter and provide them with another short-term contract that allows them to stay financially flexible moving forward. While Ellington may not be a huge signing, he gives them a quality player who has a great chance at making next season’s roster.
The Lakers do have decent depth already at the shooting guard position, but the team has had their fair share of injuries in the past. Given Kobe Bryant’s age, it doesn’t hurt to have players who can fill in, especially if the team decides to limit his minutes and give him games off. Ellington might be the team’s second best perimeter shooter, as he can knock it down from deep consistently. This outside shooting cannot be underestimated, as it well help space the floor and create more room for the facilitators on the team.
Ellington might not be a great defender, but his youth and decent athleticism gives the team another body to matchup against the better perimeter offensive players in the league. The team needed to add more young legs to the roster and were able to do so with the addition of Ellington.
The organization did not have a lot of resources to improve the team during the offseason, but did well enough with what they had. Ellington represents another signing in which management was able to bring in a quality, young player who has room to grow. His shooting can definitely help the team, and he is still getting better as a player, which will only benefit the team and their aging core.
