Now that training camp is underway, the Miami Heat organization will begin the uncomfortable process of weeding out players to slim the final roster down to 15 talented players.
Although the Heat lost LeBron James this summer, they were still able to sign quality players to keep the franchise a contender in the Eastern Conference. With Dwyane Wade returning as one of the primary focal points on offense this season, having a quality backup for him has to be a priority. This is a major reason why Shannon Brown, a journeyman in his own right, will be an absolute lock to make the final 15-man roster.
The Heat are always searching for versatile players, and this was one of the biggest draws in signing Brown. In his eight years in the league, Brown became one of the better defenders at his position, which is something the Heat desperately need heading into this season (big reason why the Heat didn’t go hard after Ray Allen in free agency). Brown will also provide to the second unit with more consistent offense, something the Heat’s bench has struggled with over the last few seasons.
Depth is one of the top defining traits in a title-contending team, and Pat Riley and the rest of the Heat organization still believe they are fielding a championship contender, hence the moves made this summer in free agency. Brown was initially signed as a player who had to fight for a spot on the roster, but now his playmaking abilities are something the Heat want backing up Wade for the foreseeable future.
It hasn’t been made official, but Brown will make the final 15-man roster, and Heat fans should get used to seeing him play steady minutes for the second unit.
