Steve Nash of the Los Angeles Lakers has recently been ruled out for the season after suffering another back injury. It has been a tough run for Nash in Los Angeles, as he has struggled to stay healthy after coming over in a sign-and-trade. The Lakers had to give up a lot of assets and committed big money to Nash for three years. They knew he was getting older, but he was a savvy veteran who could still have a big impact on offense. However, he has now turned into an expiring contract, and although it may be tough, the team should look to move him before the deadline.

While many might think that the team would be better off just keeping Nash on the roster and waiting for his salary to come off the books, the Lakers have never been an organization to remain stagnant. Plenty of teams are in rebuilding mode, and would consider moving players around in order to free up cap space and perhaps create more playing time for their younger players. Many believe they have a realistic shot at marquee free-agents, but need as much money as possible to help attract them.

Nash’s contract is worth almost $10 million this year, which is a huge amount that will free up once the season is over. The team could flip that into a quality rotation player who may not be a good fit in their current situation. A more positive possibility is if the team is able to acquire a future draft pick for Nash. Teams in the past have been willing to depart with picks in order to take on an expiring contract and free up room in the future. This situation would be even more ideal for the team as they would not have to sacrifice their financial flexibility going forward.

Moving Nash’s contract will not be easy, but teams tend to get more desperate as the season goes on. Some will realize that it is in their best interest to tank, while others will realize that it is time for them to free up cap space for future offseasons. However, the Lakers should do what they can to see what offers are out there in hopes of improving their roster.
