The race to the championship is on and teams are fighting for positioning early. The Chicago Bulls are trying to establish themselves as the prominent team in the East. As they try to get the ball rolling towards the ultimate goal, let’s take a look at the five takeaways from the Bulls so far this season.

The Chicago Bulls basically beat the New York Knicks in their season opener with the bench alone. The Bulls’ bench combined for 55 points and showcased their potential for the rest of the season. As the San Antonio Spurs have shown us, a solid bench is a much-needed weapon for a championship.

The kid out of Creighton has been a pleasant sight for Tom Thibodeau and the Bulls. Doug McDermott shooting range, 6-foot-8 frame and rugged style of play will continue to earn him playing time (13.6 minutes per game). If he can figure out how to score at this level, he can easily be in the running for Rookie of the Year honors.

With Derrick Rose back and the addition of Pau Gasol, the Bulls are instant championship contenders. It also helps that they are playing in the less competitive Eastern Conference. Their 6-2 start is reflective of the success they are sure to have if Derrick Rose can stay healthy.

Many weren’t sure if Pau Gasol could revive his career in Chicago, but his early season performance begs to differ. His averages of 18.4 points and 11.1 rebounds per game were much-needed for both Gasol and the Bulls. He has seamlessly fit into the roster and looks to be a productive piece this season.

Derrick Rose is finally back, but this isn’t the NBA MVP caliber Rose. This Rose looks different. He is still the explosive guard that is averaging 17.5 points and 5.8 rebounds per game early this season, but the fire in his eyes has dulled a bit. He has already suffered ankles injuries that have sidelined him and Rose’s comments on his life after basketball have some wondering if we’ve already seen the best from this superstar.
