Would the Chicago Bulls have been legitimate NBA championship contenders with Carmelo Anthony dressed in red and black? That is a question many fans may be asking themselves throughout the 2014-15 season after Anthony revealed how he was almost a member of the Bulls this past summer.
“It came down to Chicago and New York,” Anthony said during the documentary that is a behind-the-scenes look of his daily life. “Chicago was the one from Day 1 [and] was something I was very impressed with. They were looking for someone like me to come in and take them to the next level. So it was perfect.
“It was a perfect setup and perfect fit for me in Chicago. But also I had to think about just living in Chicago. Do I want to live in Chicago? Do I want to take everything I created in New York and move all of that? It came down to that. But there was one point in time I was like, ‘Oh, I’m going.”’
At 9-6 and the third seed in the Eastern Conference, Chicago is well on their way to becoming a playoff favorite. However, there is no denying that Anthony added to the roster would have been a game changer.
Much can be made about how Anthony fails at playing defense. In general, he has failed since he arrived in New York. The Knicks expected to win a championship by now, something they may never do during Anthony’s time in the Big Apple. At the same time, Anthony is an offensive powerhouse who has the ability to score at will. Adding a threat like that with the talent already on the Bulls could have been devastating for opponents.
Just because adding a superstar to a team with a couple of All-Stars does not necessarily mean championship success will happen. With that said, Anthony in Chicago would have greatly improved their chances.
