The Boston Celtics trading Rajon Rondo was a sign to the rest of the league that the Celtics' season was a transitional one, settling for not making the playoffs and starting a slow process of rebuilding. Funny thing is, in the East, you can be below .500 and still make the playoffs, and the Celtics are currently just two games back from the No. 8 spot. Here are five players the Celtics should target before the 2015 trade deadline arrives.

5. Michael Carter-Williams

The Boston Celtics' point guard depth is a little lacking to say the least, especially with the departure of Rajon Rondo. Michael Carter-Williams would be an excellent addition to a young core group of players. Carter-Williams is averaging 15.3 points, 7.1 assists, and 1.5 steals. His defense would blend well with coach Brad Stevens' schemes.

Like Michael Carter-Williams, an addition such as Deron Williams would be a huge boost for the Celtics backcourt. Williams would also add a veteran presence to a very young team. His mentorship of fellow point guards Marcus Smart and Phil Pressey would also be vital to keeping this team on the right path in terms of development.

3. Arron Afflalo

The Denver Nuggets are reportedly shopping Afflalo, so the Boston Celtics could potentially swoop in and steal the seven-year shooting guard for pennies on the dollar. Afflalo is purely a scorer, and the Celtics could use more offense out of their shooting guard rotation.

2. Jordan Hill

With the Los Angeles Lakers currently in the rebuilding stage, Jordan Hill could a player that the Lakers are willing to let go of for the right price. Hill is a phenomenal rebounder, and he would tie the Celtics' current top rebounder, Jared Sullinger. The difference is Hill is a much better player on the offensive end.

1. Thomas Robinson

The Portland Trail Blazers have a logjam at the center and power forward positions, and the Celtics are in need of a quality rebounder. Although his rebounding averages are low (4.3 rebounds over 12.3 minutes), Robinson’s height and age are enticing enough to give the second-year power forward playing time on a team that’s still in the rebuilding process.
