The Orlando Magic stole Adrian Griffin away from the Chicago Bulls, and that is just another sign that the team means business in their quest to take the next step from being NBA doormats to playoff contenders.

If you haven’t heard of Griffin, here is a quick refresher course for you. He was one of the top assistant coaches to ex-Bulls head coach Tom Thibodeau. Griffin was one of the chief architects of Chicago’s rise to the near top of the NBA which made him a rising star in the coaching world.

So why was Griffin so ready to leave a (sort of) good situation in Chicago for a team that has been in the lottery for the past three seasons? The answer is two-fold.

First, new Bulls coach Fred Hoiberg brought in Jim Boylen as the top assistant in the Windy City, and this left Griffin as the odd man out. Second, Griffin and new Magic head coach Scott Skiles have history together. He worked with Skiles on the Milwaukee Bucks and was chief in helping mold a middle of the road team into playoff contenders.

Make no mistake, this is a big coup for Orlando. The Magic finally have an assistant coach who can draw up schemes to make the team’s trio of young stars potent in the East, and his resume as a player developer will only make the Magic stronger.

Griffin’s hiring may not be headline worthy, but rest assured that the Magic’s future is looking even brighter with him in the Magic Kingdom.
