The Orlando Magic are thinking about trading down in the 2015 NBA Draft for veteran help. The next appropriate question is whether the front office should be drug tested?
Why on Earth would Orlando trade away the No. 5 pick? Let’s be real here, the Magic are not title contenders next season, nor the season after that. Their goal is to get back to the playoffs, and with the nucleus that’s already in place, and a coach in Scott Skiles who will demand results, this team is well on their way.
But that doesn’t mean that they should get a veteran to help push them over the hump, and it’s certainly not worth giving up the fifth pick to achieve that goal.
If you haven’t heard already, this year’s draft is ridiculously deep, and the player that they should be chasing after, Justise Winslow, will most certainly be on the board by the time the Magic are ready to pick.
Winslow is another two-way threat who will be able to help Orlando immediately, and he will be enough to push this team back into the playoffs and make them contenders for years to come. So it makes little sense for the Magic to trade down just to get a veteran who may, or may not, help the team next season.
The Magic already have a talented nucleus in place, and the draft will produce a player who will make an immediate impact. There is no reason whatsoever why the Magic should trade away the fifth pick, and if they do, it will be one of the biggest blunders in team history.
