Since 2015 NBA Free Agency started on Tuesday night (or Wednesday morning for some), numerous NBA teams have been clawing to get their opportunity to woo big man LaMarcus Aldridge. While the San Antonio Spurs, Phoenix Suns and Los Angeles Lakers have received the most attention from the former Portland Trail Blazers star, the Miami Heat have thrown their hat into the ring.

Unfortunately for Pat Riley and Co., their decision to enter the race nearly two days into the start of free agency could cost them big in the pursuit of Aldridge. The athletic power foward has already had meetings with most of the teams that have shown interest — the Lakers will even get a second shot — while the Heat are just now preparing to set up a meeting. Entering the mix that late usually means you’ll be nothing more than an afterthought.

Especially with the Heat already possessing an outstanding stretch four in Chris Bosh and still needing cap space to sign Dwyane Wade, adding Aldridge seems like an unnecessary expenditure for Miami. He’d force them to part with several other pieces in order to make room for another max contract, which would certainly limit their contender potential — something other options possess plenty of.

Florida doesn’t have state income taxes, and Aldridge could be the final piece to another Big Three in Miami. That’s about the only allure, and I doubt that’s enough to make the Heat serious contenders at this point.
