This entire season was a weird one for the Miami Heat as they went from perennial No. 1 contender to struggling to keep their grips on a lottery pick. As a result, everyone on every team seems to be considered a potential person of interest.

It ranges from the longest shot — LaMarcus Aldridge — to the most ridiculous, like the rumored deal with J.J. Barea.

Now this is no major knock against Barea. He would have been a great fit for Erik Spoelstra’s new fast-paced offense, had he not returned to Dallas. However taller point guards who can play in the post would have abused him. And although he shot a better percentage from the floor than Mario Chalmers and averaged fewer turnovers, it still feels like it would have been a downgrade due to his lack of ability to moonlight at both reserve guard spots. Hence why signing a player like Lou Williams would make more sense.

According to the Miami Herald’s Barry Jackson, the NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year and the Heat have “mutual interest.”

Believe it or not, Williams’ 16 points per game is exactly what the team would need to bolster their weak bench. But only if he could sustain his hot regular-season shooting instead of dipping to 31 percent from the field and 20 percent from the 3-point line like he did in the playoffs.

Pat Riley would need to create some space with a sizable salary dump, but who would really bet against the Heat’s resident roster magician?
