Cleveland Cavaliers Rumors: Trading For Joe Johnson Would Make Team NBA Title Favorites
Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports

The Cleveland Cavaliers and Brooklyn Nets are reportedly discussing a trade that would send forward Joe Johnson to the Cavaliers. There have been no reports of who the Cavaliers would be sending back to the Nets, but as long as it’s not LeBron James, Kevin Love, Kyrie Irving, Tristan Thompson, or Timofey Mozgov, the Cavaliers should pull the trigger, despite Johnson’s massive contract.

With the loss of J.R. Smith, the Cavaliers are lacking a shooter who can knock down jumpers consistently, and although Johnson struggled a little last season, he’s done that throughout his entire career. There has been a significant amount of drama surrounding the Nets for the past few seasons, including owner Mikhail Prokhorov going back and forth on whether or not he is going to sell the team. As a result, the Nets have been a bit dysfunctional, and a change of scenery would do wonders for Johnson.

The Cavaliers had one weakness last season, and that was scoring from the wing. James played point guard and power forward most of the season, rarely playing the three-spot. With an expected starting lineup of James, Mozgov, Love, Irving, and Iman Shumpert, Johnson could either be a source of scoring from the bench, or take Shumpert’s spot in the starting lineup. Either way, as long as Johnson can knock down shots, he will be a tremendous asset to the Cavaliers.

It’s entirely possible that Shumpert would be part of the package headed to the Nets for Johnson, in fact, it might be probable. With the San Antonio Spurs acquiring LaMarcus Aldridge, and re-signing Kawhi Leonard and Danny Green, and the Golden State Warriors keeping its team intact by re-signing Draymond Green, the Cavaliers have to do something if they’re going to challenge either of those teams in the NBA Finals next season. Acquiring Johnson would be more than doing something, it would make the Cavaliers the NBA title favorites.
