Mario Hezonja is now two games into his NBA career, and you have to be enthused if you’re an Orlando Magic fan.

The numbers won’t jump off the page at you: through two games, Hezonja is 9-of-24 from the field and 4-of-14 from downtown. He is shooting in volume, so some missed shots are expected. I know it’s just two games, but Hezonja is scoring a very respectable 19 points per 36 minutes.

It’s Summer League, though, and numbers aren’t everything. What’s most important is how he’s playing, and he’s playing like a future star. He threw down a one-handed baseline alley-oop in today’s game that was plain dirty; that play is a lot harder than it looks. He did miss a few dunks, but I’ll take missed dunks in Summer League over inactivity any day of the week.

Hezonja also looks engaged in the action, interacting with Aaron Gordon and Elfrid Payton, players with whom he’ll be sharing the floor often in the regular season. It’s never too early to start building chemistry, and the trio have been passing the ball skillfully amongst themselves. Hezonja hit the game-winning three in his first contest, and has been invested in winning so far; he’s not simply going through the motions.

Perhaps most encouragingly, Hezonja has been looking to create some offense instead of just spotting up in the corner. As an international player getting adjusted to the American game, he could well have done that, but he’s instead looked to score and distribute in spots. That was Hezonja’s biggest knock heading into the draft–a lack of game outside of threes and dunks.

These threes will start falling; the guy’s shot is pure. Assuming they do, the Magic have a great rookie on their hands, and were well justified in taking him with the No. 5 pick. With Hezonja jumping on board a talented young roster, look for the Magic to be the playoff contender in the East this year that few saw coming.
