Philadelphia 76ers Rumors: Norris Cole Would Be A Slight Upgrade At Point Guard

The Philadelphia 76ers have yet to sign any free agents this offseason, but should they sign Norris Cole, the Sixers would slightly improve their point guard situation.

The way things stand right now, the 76ers only have two point guards on their roster, with possibly a third being added after the NBA Summer League. Out of these three potential point guards, only one possesses the abilities to contribute in a meaningful way for the team and that is 22-year-old Tony Wroten. However, the only concerning thing about Wroten – of course aside from his sometimes troubling turnover issues – is that he had season-ending surgery to repair a partially torn ACL last February. With that in mind, the 76ers would be wise to search for another player who can help man the position and according to reports that player could just be Norris Cole.

A 26-year-old point guard out of Cleveland State, Cole has four years of valuable NBA experience under his belt, something many on the 76ers roster currently lack. For the first three and a half seasons of his NBA career, Cole was a key role player for the Miami Heat. During his time in Miami, Cole averaged almost 22 minutes per game for a team that made three consecutive NBA Finals appearances and won two of them.

Last season, as the Heat shopped around for some added star power, Cole was traded to the New Orleans Pelicans as a part of a three-team trade that saw the Heat acquire Goran Dragic. As a member of the Pelicans, Cole was able to increase his scoring output by almost three points per game, while also increasing both his three-point field goal percentage and his overall field goal percentage.

Because he is a restricted free agent, the Pelicans will be granted the opportunity to match any offer that the 76ers may extend to Cole. Recent reports have stated that the Pelicans’ desired salary number for Cole next season is between $3 and $4 million, so if the 76ers do in fact have serious interest in him, they will likely have to offer Cole upwards of $4 million per season.

After two seasons of tanking, it is time for the 76ers to start taking steps in a positive direction. One way they can begin to do this is by upgrading the talent on their roster. Looking at the potential money, giving Cole upwards of $4 million a season may seem high, but for the 76ers, money is not really an issue at this point in time. He may not be the most gifted point guard out there, but compared to what the 76ers currently have at the position – Wroten, Isaiah Canaan and possibly T.J. McConnell – Cole would from day one be arguably the best point guard on the team’s roster, despite some of his flaws.
