The Los Angeles Lakers summer league hasn’t gone as most NBA fans imagined. They have not dominated, in fact they’ve been the opposite. The Lakers have gone 1-3 and have looked like a mess at times. They have all the talent in the world for a summer league team. Key components are D’Angelo Russell, Jordan Clarkson, Jabari Brown, and Randle. The problem is that they are playing one-on-one basketball. Against the Philadelphia 76ers and New York Knicks they had a combined 11 assists.

Randle looked rusty in the first two summer league contests against the Minnesota Timberwolves and Knicks. Things changed on Wednesday night, when the Lakers took on the Dallas Mavericks. The 20-year-old forward went for 17 points on 6-11 from the field. Randle displayed an arsenal of mid-range shots and ball-handling skills.

It’s hard to evaluate Randle’s summer league so far as he has been playing in 4-5 minute spurts. In the previous two games, Randle averaged 9 points and 3.5 rebounds in 20 minutes. One area that Randle can use improvement in the summer is his rebounding. His 3.7 rebounds in 20.3 minutes aren’t going to cut it. In his lone season at Kentucky he averaged 10.4 rebounds in 30.8 minutes, so it shouldn’t be too much of a concern.

Randle has already shown significant improvement in his shooting ability. In the contest against the Mavericks, Randle made two impressive mid-range jumpers. One of the jumpers was a step-back over Jeremy Tyler, who measures at 6-foot-10.

If Randle continues to develop his range he will surely be a mismatch, as he has the handle of a wing. Randle is a freight train with the ball in his hands at 6-foot-9, 250 pounds. His handle is reminiscent of Lamar Odom, but he is stronger and possesses a tighter dribble.

Randle will blow by most power forwards and will bully nearly every small forward, who dares to defend him.

Expect Randle to average in the range of 14 points, 9 rebounds, and 3 assists in his first full season. The future is bright for the Lakers.
