T.J. Warren Will Have Breakout Sophomore Season for the Phoenix Suns

Through four games in Summer League, Phoenix Suns forward T.J. Warren has played about as well as anyone. He’s averaged 24 points per 36 minutes, shooting 57 percent from the field and leading his Suns team to a 3-1 record. Yes, not all Summer League stars shine in the NBA. But with Warren, I think there’s reason to trust the numbers.

The No. 14 pick in last year’s draft, Warren didn’t have much of a rookie season. The Suns’ rotations were a mess; Warren spent most of the year stashed in the depth chart behind P.J. Tucker, Brandan Wright and the Morris twins. Coach Jeff Hornacek repeatedly playing multiple point guards didn’t help clear space, either.

Nevertheless, Warren managed to be productive in the minutes he did play. He appeared in 40 games for the Suns, averaging 14 points per 36 and shooting 52 percent from the field. Granted, these were often garbage time stints, but NBA production is NBA production.

This year, things are looking up. With Wright now on the Memphis Grizzlies and Marcus Morris on the Detroit Pistons, Warren could well be the Suns’ first forward off the bench. It should be a battle between him and newly-signed sharpshooter Mirza Teletovic. There’s also a real possibility the Suns flame out early in the season, which would open up even more minutes for the young forward to develop.

Is Warren up to the task? I think so. The guy is a scorer, plain and simple. He knows how to get buckets from anywhere inside the three-point line, demonstrating the versatility you need to beat NBA defenders. He’ll probably want to extend his range beyond the arc eventually, but the keyword there is “eventually.”

Look for Warren to see a major uptick in minutes this season, and put up some very respectable numbers in the process. My prediction: 25 MPG, 13 PPG, 50 percent shooting and a spot in the 2016 Rising Stars Challenge.
