Grading the Philadelphia 76ers' 2015 NBA Free Agency

The Philadelphia 76ers are still a good ways away from even being competitive. This free agency period further proves why.

The 76ers have been pretty quiet for the most part this offseason. Philadelphia’s most notable move this offseason was drafting Duke big man Jahlil Okafor with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2015 NBA Draft. That pick certainly had some people scratching their heads, but it actually works out in their favor, as Joel Embiid will likely be missing another full season.

Outside of the draft, the Sixers made multiple moves that probably will have little to no impact on their future as an organization. Philadelphia struck a deal with the Sacramento Kings, through which they acquired Nik Stauskas, Carl Landry, and Jason Thompson. Considering the 76ers are in the midst of a rebuilding process, I’m not quite sure how this move helps them going forward.

The 76ers also signed point guard Pierre Jackson to a four-year contract. This move definitely has some potential, but it will depend heavily on whether or not Jackson can stay healthy. He is a gifted player, but injuries have slowed him down. Should he remain healthy, however, Jackson could possibly compete for the starting job at point guard. Take that for what it’s worth.

The only other move the 76ers made this free agency was to reject qualifying offers for Henry Sims, Thomas Robinson, and Jason Richardson. It really wouldn’t have been smart to retain any of the three because they don’t bring much value.

Philadelphia did not get better much better this offseason, but they didn’t get worse either. Considering the 76ers’ recent mediocrity, it’s safe to say there’s nowhere to go but up.
