Houston Rockets Trade For Ty Lawson, Finally Address Gaping Hole At Backup Point Guard

As a Houston Rockets fan, I desperately was hoping they would take a point guard in the 2015 NBA Draft. After losing Patrick Beverley late last season, it was clear they needed another body — Jason Terry is not the answer. I was shocked when they passed on Jerian Grant from Notre Dame, who would have been a great fit, but have now finally addressed the dire situation with a trade for Ty Lawson, according to Yahoo’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

In my obviously biased opinion, I believe this is a perfect move for the Rockets. Lawson is a scoring complement to Beverley, who earns his keep at the defensive end. Beverley will likely remain the starter, and Lawson can be that spark plug off the bench. The Rockets legitimately have someone they can rely on as the backup for each position now.

Lawson, Terry, Corey Brewer, the non-starter between Donatas Motiejunas and Terrence Jones and Clint Capela make up a strong second unit. Two years ago, the Rockets had one of the worst benches in the league. They now boast one of the strongest.

Now, this all obviously hinges on Lawson not being a problem off the court. That’s been an issue as he was recently arrested for his second DUI within a year. There may still be some legal action, or even a punishment from the league, but the Rockets wouldn’t have traded for him unless they knew they’d be able to count on him.

It’s not the free agency splash many fans were hoping for, but like the Trevor Ariza signing last offseason, it could turn out to be a fantastic move by Daryl Morey.
