Dorell Wright Is A Terrific Option For Los Angeles Lakers

The Los Angeles Lakers roster is basically set with one exception: they are missing a small forward. It appears that the Lakers will use Kobe Bryant at that position with D’Angelo Russell and Jordan Clarkson starting in the backcourt.

The only other player on the Lakers who can get away with playing small forward is Anthony Brown. The 6-foot-8 rookie from Stanford made at least 44 percent of his threes in his final two collegiate seasons. Brown has the potential to be a similar player to ex-Laker Trevor Ariza, but he has ways to go. He must add weight to his 215-pound frame, and he can use improvement on his footwork.

Nick Young and Ryan Kelly played some small-forward last season, but they are better in their respective positions. Who can the Lakers get to play some small-forward and won’t cost much? The answer is Dorell Wright. The 29-year-old veteran averaged 4.6 points and 2.3 rebounds for the Portland Trail Blazers last season. Wright is a perfect bench option, and it’s possible that he can sign at the veteran’s minimum.

Last season Wright shot 38 percent from three-point range in a limited bench role. He is a career 37 percent three-point shooter. He is a solid “three and D” guy off the bench that the Lakers are missing. Wright is an intriguing option, as he is 6-foot-9 and can defend both wing spots.

The 11-year veteran is also a Los Angeles native which means that he may have interest in being a Laker. Wright isn’t the player he was in 2011 when he averaged 16.4 points and 5.3 rebounds, but he will help L.A. tremendously.
