In search for a championship ring before he calls it a career, small forward Richard Jefferson has decided to sign a one-year deal at the veteran’s minimum with the Cleveland Cavaliers. Despite only registering 5.8 points per game with the Dallas Mavericks last season, the signing is good for the Cavaliers because it provides a necessary wing depth.

Reports originally surfaced stating the 35-year-old was nearly a lock to re-sign with the Mavericks. However, much like DeAndre Jordan, Jefferson had a change of heart. Unlike Jordan, though, the Los Angeles native cleared the decision with owner Mark Cuban.

“He called and talked to me,” Cuban told ESPN. “RJ said he had an opportunity with an Eastern Conference team. He said he would honor what he [originally agreed to with the Mavs] but thought the other was a better fit. I told him I was OK with it and understood.”

Even though Jefferson should not expect to see much playing time behind LeBron James and other notable players, his ability to knock down shots from three-point range gives the Cavaliers confidence he will be a factor throughout the season. In fact, he converted 42.6 percent of his 2.1 shot attempts from beyond the arc last season, which was his highest three-point shooting percentage in five years.

Jefferson is certainly not the jaw-dropping signing that will give Cleveland the undeniable shot at winning a title. But, it does give them an interesting piece that could help when it matters most. Plus, the signing will put pressure on J.R. Smith to re-join the team, which is something the Cavaliers need in order to be successful.
