San Antonio Spurs' Becky Hammon Will Be A Head Coach in Less Than Five Years

Right before our eyes Becky Hammon is changing the landscape of NBA basketball. She is an assistant coach for the San Antonio Spurs currently, but the former guard out of Colorado State University is essentially going to graduate school for the position she wants to one day possess: head coach.

We’ve seen guys come into head coaching fresh off of other assignments like Steve Kerr and have immediate success, but it’d still be amazing to watch a member of the female gender finally be trusted with a team’s fortune. Gregg Popovich has done this before with other assistant coaches; however, he’d probably see it as one of his biggest victories if Hammon was able to develop into an elite NBA coach. That would be a pretty amazing record for Popovich as far as developing young coaching/management talent.

She’ll get her shot within five years. It is just a matter of whether things happen with the Spurs after Popovich retires or if she will go somewhere else. Hammon’s path to success would be a bit easier in San Antonio because she’d already be working with folks who know and trust her. The Spurs also have a way of downplaying storylines that other teams would allow to spin out of their control, and Hammon would benefit greatly from that. Whether or not she wants to coach elsewhere will likely depend on how soon she desires to try this out. If she can wait until 2019 when Pop will most likely retire, then Hammon will have a team ready for her to lead. But should she get impatient about trying her luck, then I’m sure the Sacramento Kings will give her a call next summer.
