Paul George Is Indiana Pacers' Most Pleasant Surprise At 2015-16 Halfway Point

By Brendan Patel

Paul George suffered a horrific injury over a year ago, a devastating blow to a rising player who was ready to take his place among the league’s elite. He had previously had some very good playoffs battles with some of the best players in the world, and looked poise to become the next big thing. He was a two-way star with unlimited potential, but his injury cost him most of the season and it was unclear how he would return. Luckily for the Indiana Pacers, George put in the work and is playing at an extremely high level for the team.

George has picked up right where he left off before his injury, and his all-around game has made him a legitimate star in the league. Offensively, he is the Pacers’ best threat, and can beat teams from a variety of spots on the court. He is a very good 3-point shooter, and has shown that he can shoot from deep off of the dribble or by spotting up and playing off of his teammates. He has worked hard on his dribbling and now is more than capable of beating his man to get his shot off. George also acts as a playmaker, dishing out four assists a game and using his height to see over smaller perimeter players while using his speed to blow past big men.

Defensively is where George first made a name for himself, and he remains one of the best one on one defenders in the league. He has great size for the position, and utilizes his length to make it extremely difficult for offensive players. He has shown a unique ability to avoid screens as much as possible, and his opponents have trouble losing him. He is strong in the paint and gets his fair share of rebounds, which also allows him to push the ball up the court and start the offense while others are still transitioning back.

The Pacers have changed a lot since a few years back when they were one of the top teams in the Eastern Conference, and still need more talent on their roster to compete. However, George has proven that he can be their go-to player and this is a team that could be dangerous in the playoffs. He has responded well to a tough injury, and worked extremely hard to get back to playing at a high level. Still a young player, the sky is the limit for George.
