2016 Free Agency Will Be Dwight Howard's Last Chance For Big Contract

Dwight Howard has burned a lot of bridges during his NBA career, and he has now added the Houston Rockets to that list. He recently declined his $23.2 million player option for the 2016-17 season to enter free agency, and it doesn’t seem likely that he’ll sign with the Rockets again.

The Los Angeles Lakers and Orlando Magic also have cause to be mad at Howard, and that will leave the big man with few choices this summer. The Rockets basically turned over their entire offense to shooting guard James Harden this past season; that won’t change at all under new head coach Mike D’Antoni next year, and if anything the backcourt will be featured even more often.

Howard hated D’Antoni’s offense in their time with the Lakers. That was actually part of the reason why he bolted town so quickly. So, where will Howard eventually land? There are some viable options for him.

He only averaged 13.7 points per game last year, and that was the worst output since his rookie season. However, the Dallas Mavericks, Portland Trail Blazers and Milwaukee Bucks would all overlook his faults and at least give him a meeting. The Magic also could be persuaded into considering a reunion, but Howard would have to really humble himself. That would be a truly bizarre turn of events, and the big man returning to Orlando isn’t something anybody would’ve predicted a couple years ago.

Howard should enjoy this big payday, because he probably won’t get another one. If he wants to win a title, then the Blazers or Mavericks are the best bet for him. However, the Bucks could have a resurgent year after inking head coach Jason Kidd to a lengthy extension. Howard must repair his reputation around the league to have a long career, because otherwise he could be playing in China before we know it. This is certainly his last chance to get a max contract in the NBA.
